Located along the Ohio River in West Virginia, the city of Moundsville was named for Grave Creek Mound which is probably one of the largest burial mounds in United States. This extraordinary historical landmark is one of the numerous mounds built by the Adena culture, a pre-Colombian native culture. A small city, Moundsville, with a population of approximately 2000 has a rich historical and cultural background. It was founded in 1771 by James and Samuel Tomlinson. Probably Moundsville’s most recognizable landmark, the retired West Virginia State Penitentiary was built in the gothic style and has served as an inspiration for both literary and movie works. It is often referred as one of the scariest places on Earth acting as subject to reality shows investigating whether this monumental place really is haunted. The Penitentiary has now been turned into a museum with various tourist offers.

Another important city symbol is the Moundsville Bridge, a through-type arch bridge that connects Moundsville with Belmont County in Ohio. The Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold is a perfect place for Far East admirers and it’s situated near the city. It has plenty of exotic flower gardens, terraces, and fountains. For all those history lovers there is the Marshall County Historical Museum which keeps plenty of artifacts and historical documents. The Fostoria Glass Company, well known for its fine quality hand blown glass, had its headquarters here from 1891 to 1986 and is now commemorated with the Fostoria Glass Museum located in Moundsville. Also located here is the Marx Toy Museum, a unique museum that displays a variety of toys from different decades.
